Configuring your Computer To Connect To The Internet Using Windows 98

First things first, check to make sure your telephone line is connected to your computer's modem and that you have a dial tone.

  1. Click on the Start button, then go to "Settings", then "Control Panel" and click on it to open the Control Panel.
  2. Find "Modems" and double click it to open.
  3. You will see the type of modem you have in computer in window.
    (If you have Win modem make sure it is installed correctly. Win modems do not perform as well as other modems, such as Rockwell chipset modems or US Robotics.)
  4. Click "Properties". Then click the "Connection" tab at the top of the page. On the bottom of the page you will see a button called "Port Settings", click it. On this page you will see two buffer settings, Receive and  Transmit. Make sure the slide bars are all the way to the right in the high position. Click "OK", Then "OK" again. Now you will be at the "Modem Properties" page. Click "Close" and you will be back at the "Control Panel" window.
  5. Find "Network" and double click it. You will open the "Network" window and you will be on the "Configuration" tab. The network components that you must have are "Client for Microsoft Networks", "Dialup Adapter", and "TCP/IP" (protocol). With out these your dialup connection will not work. If you do not see these components click on "Add". You will then see "Select Network Component Type" window open. Click on the component you wish to install, then click on the "Add" button. Example: Click "Client" then then click the "Add" button. You'll see the "Select Network Client" window open. The window will be split. On side you will see "Manufactures" on the other "Network Client". You will choose "Microsoft" for manufacture and "Client for Microsoft Networks" for network client. Remember when doing this process with any of the components to always choose "Microsoft" for the manufacture. If your Computer ask for an name or a workgroup click on the "Identification" tab and give it any name. In the workgroup type WORKGROUP and click "OK". Your computer will copy files then ask you to restart, click "Yes". It will restart for you.
  6. After your computer restarts open "Control Panel" as described in step one. Find "Add/Remove Programs" and double click it to open. Click the "Windows Setup" tab at the top of the page. Your computer will search for installed components. When this is done you will see a list of installed components. Click only once on "Communications" and it will highlight the bar. Click "Details" on the lower right. You will see all the components install under "Communications". Make sure all of them have a check in box.  You do not need to check "Direct Cable Connection" unless you are using that option. Also you do not need "ATM Support" (this option may not be available depending on version of O.S.). Then click "OK". Then click "Apply" at the button of the window. Your Computer will start copying files, when it stops it may tell you that you need to restart your computer. Click "Yes" and allow it to restart again. If your computer does not tell you to restart go to the next step.
  7. After your computer restarts close the "Control Panel" window by clicking the "X" at the top right corner. Double click the "My Computer" icon and the "My Computer" window will open. In this window you will see "Dialup Networking" icon, double click it to open. In this window you will see the "Make New Connection" icon. Double click it to open. Your computer will open "Make New Connection" window asking you to type a name for the computer your dialing. Type PM Computers Online Inc. in the block. Make sure your modem is in the "Select a device" block. Click the "Next" button. Now you will be ask to enter the phone number to the the computer you want do dial. Enter 675-2800 in the telephone number block. As for the area code, you will not need this so leave it blank. Click the "Next" button. Now you will see the final screen and it will show the connection you've created. Click the "Finished" button. Now you will see the "Dial-Up Networking" window with your new connection listed in it. Place your arrow over the icon (telephone with two computer monitors) push your right mouse button (Only use this mouse bottom when instructed). You will see a menu pop up. At the bottom of the menu you will see "Properties". Use your left mouse bottom and click on "Properties". You will see a window open named PM Computers Online Inc.. You will be on the "General" tab. Make sure the "Use area code and Dialing Properties" block does not have a check in it. Click on the "Server Types" tab. Make sure the only blocks checked on this window is "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP". Click the "OK" button. Now you can close the "Dial-up Networking" window by clicking the "X" at the top right corner.
  8. On your desktop you will see the "Internet Explorer". Place your arrow over the icon and click the right mouse button. You will see a menu pop up. At the bottom of the menu you will see "Properties", left click on the same. You will be on the "General" tab. In the Home page address block type in www.pmcol.com. Click on the "Connection" tab. In the "Dial-up settings" block you will see PM Computers Online Inc.. Make sure it has (Default) at the end of it. If not click on PM Computers Online Inc. once to highlight it. Then click the "Set Default" button. On this will you will see three choices:

    Never dial a connection
    Dial whenever a network connection is not present
    Always dial my default connection

    Make sure "Always dial my default connection" is checked. Now click the "OK" button.
